A World Expanding Beyond the Traditional Centers

For decades, the gravitational pull of the art world revolved around a familiar triangle: New York, London, Paris. Later, Hong Kong and Miami expanded the map.

Today, however, the narrative is shifting.

At Ethos Squared, we believe culture moves through people - across borders, generations, and disciplines. Dancing Basis is a powerful expression of that belief. The work was born in April 2023, inside Mongezi Ncaphayi’s studio at the Cape Town Art Residency in Woodstock.

Every December, Miami transforms into the global epicenter of contemporary art - but for the African diaspora, Miami Art Week is much more than an international fair. It becomes a return, a reunion, a remembering. 

Once upon a time, the global art world looked through a narrow lens. For decades, Art Basel - one of the world’s most influential art fairs - was seen as a showcase for European and American perspectives, with the African and diasporic voice relegated to the margins.
